    how tough would it be to cobble together a post rating system for wordpress based on this?

    Probably not too difficult if you were familiar with the wordpress database hooks.
    Unfortunantly, I’m not very. looks like a nifty idea though. Perhaps you should pursue it further. If you have not played with Php before this may be a nice place to start.
